"Value" Is A Relative Concept

Sold! $731
Value can be defined as "the importance, worth or usefulness of something." I've always defined it as whatever two people agree upon on any given day.

And today as I watched the auction wind down on this 1986 red/white/blue VFR fuel tank it had a value to me of about $200. But to its buyer that value was $731. That's impressive — I've bought entire Interceptors for less. But something about its importance, or its worth, or its usefulness (or all of the above) meant that at least two VFR guys were willing to fight it out...and it ended at the number 731.

For his or her money, there's a lot to like here: no hardware but nice original finish, very clean interior and the big one — no dents. The tank sure looks good in the Colorado sunshine. Congratulations to buyer and seller.

I hesitate to admit this but I was the guy that lost. I really wanted this tank. I looks to be almost flawless. The paint is perfect. In usual fashion I will never bid until the last 15 seconds. At that point I bid the highest amount I would ever want to spend. Usually the second bidder never reaches that high of a price and I win. The day I bid on this tank, it was around $100 all week. I expected to pay around $400. I bid with about 10 seconds left, time enough for a slow internet to lock in. I bid $721, the highest crazy number that I would never want to pay! In the final few seconds, I saw it go to $385, not too bad, and then $585, not too good. All these bids were losing to my $721. With about 3 seconds left, I saw it hit $731 and the words "You've been outbid" come on the screen. I couldn't believe it...I lost!!! I wanted that tank so bad. Wait a minute, this means that I don't get the tank but I also don't have to pay an outrageous price. What is amazing to me is that the person that won, had the chance to quit when he saw $585. That means he played the game like me and must have entered $800 or $1000, just to win! There you have it, even though I lost, I somehow think I won! A week later I won a decent tank for $130, much better. BTW, the shipping charge was $20. The winner actually paid $751. Joe maybe you should change the title...lol
